ARGENA
Terroir
The Argena vineyard, which gives its name to the wine, is nestled in the woods of the hills between Castello del Calcione and Castello di Gargonza.
The highly oxygenated air, the favourable exposure, and the hilltop altitude all actively contribute to the wine's extraordinary uniqueness.
Blend
Winemaking
Grapes sourced from 50-year-old Sangiovese vines of indigenous clones, carefully harvested, with small quantities (6 to 8%) of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
The manual harvest in small crates involves a skilled selection of the best bunches, followed by processing in the cellar within a few hours.
Winemaking in oak vats made of French and Slavonian oak with abundant manual punch-downs during the first eight days of alcoholic fermentation, followed by a long maceration on the skins for a total of 21 days.
The high tannin content, acidity and alcohol level allow for minimal addition of sulfites.
Aging
After resting in oak vats following winemaking, the wine ages first in French barriques for a period of twenty-four months, then for several years in small wooden barrels.
Bottling is preceded by light filtration to allow for evolution in the bottle.
2009
Perfect season: a harsh winter with abundant rainfall allowed to cope well with the hot, dry summer, which was particularly well endured by our old vines.
A smooth and fruity wine, pronounced on the nose and still with great potential for evolution in the bottle, as shown by the tasting. Fresh, lingering flavour with a hint of salinity. Good persistence and a vibrant ruby red colour.

Mild and dry winter followed by a generous, water-rich spring. The summer had normal temperatures but was very dry, an important characteristic for achieving perfect ripeness and over-ripening of very healthy grapes.
An excellent vintage, more assertive and tannic than others, yet accompanied by a complex bouquet of aromas ranging from herbal to spicy to ripe fruit. On the palate, it opens slowly and leaves a pleasant persistence, surprising in its evolution from one glass to the next.

A cold winter and a warm spring created the perfect mix to limit pests and promote bud germination. A dry but not particularly hot summer followed, creating optimal conditions for the even ripening of the grapes. A perfect season.
This perfection is also reflected in the wine, which is characterized by rare softness and harmony, achieved after a good aging that brings Sangiovese to its highest expressions.

After a rainy winter and spring, cool and breezy summer months followed, without significant temperature fluctuations. A season, therefore, without particular challenges that allowed for the harvest of a good product at the peak of ripeness.
A robust and tannic wine with excellent evolution in a decanter and in the glass. Herbaceous and spicy aromatic notes, with a beautiful ruby red colour tending towards garnet. Typical salinity of the best Sangiovese wines.

A very hot summer, with temperatures above normal and no precipitation, was well endured by our old vines, which gave us very healthy grapes with a high sugar level in over-ripening.
Beautiful colour, as is typical of pure Sangiovese. A complex spicy note, with warm elements of Mediterranean scrub and cherry. Nice roundness of taste and good body.

The climate was particularly favourable, with very little rainfall during the summer. Temperatures remained above the seasonal average, facilitating complete and early ripening of the grapes.
Bright ruby red colour. Aroma of ripe fruit, apple, and sweet cherry, mingled with a note of vanilla from the wood. On the palate, a firm tannin attack. A very elegant finish that evokes the sweetness of fine pipe tobaccos, not overpowering.

Wine of ruby colour with garnet reflections, exhibiting beautiful brilliance and a complex aroma. The fruity note is vibrant, and the hint of oak is well integrated. The taste is robust, with mature, evolved notes that are very mineral.
